The `Corpus Middeleeuws Aardewerk (CMA)' is a series on medieval ceramics in the Netherlands and Flanders. In each volume ceramic objects are described and drawn which have been found in closed contexts, which are strictly dated by external data. The Corpus originated from a working party on medieval ceramics during the first meeting of Dutch and Flemish medieval archaeologists in Amsterdam in 1975. There is no systematic overview of medieval ceramics of the Low Countries, only part of the production centres are known, local and regional ceramic groups have not been published. Moreover, terminology is not standardized, technological research is almost non existent. However, there is a lively oral tradition among Dutch and Flemish archaeologists on these subjects, but this information is not always reliable, nor easily to consult.
The purpose of CMA is `to bring together standardized data on ceramics which are dated by external factors and on ceramics from likewise dated closed archaeological contexts, in order to obtain a chronological survey of ceramics used in the Low Countries during the Middle Ages. The first two volumes were published in 1983 and since 13 volumes have appeared in the A-series and one in the B-series. In the A-series the ceramics are dated by very strict external data, those published in the B-series are somewhat less certain.
